Freedom of movement: a crucial issue, a fundamental human right, particularly felt at this time. Not long ago we announced the closing of the internal borders of many European countries, as well as the external borders of the EU.

These days many countries are finally reopening their borders (acomprehensive timeline here).

The reopening of the EU’s external borders is expected soon (by July 1).

Covid-19 has had an impact also on movements between countries, but unfortunately it is not the first time nor the only reason for which there is a temporary, more or less prolonged return of border controls, possible in cases where the security of a member country is deemed to be at risk and the entire Schengen Area.

Yes, the Schengen Area: we take it for granted, but it is at the moment when it fails that we realize its importance. For 35 years it has accompanied us and brought the citizens of all European countries closer together!

In this beautiful vintage photo we see illustrated the moment of the signing of the Schengen Convention on June 14, 1985, which Italy joined on November 27, 1990.

In this song, dedicated specifically to Schengen, we breathe some of the values that inspired it: the desire to move freely and the dream of building one’s future in a barrier-free Europe.

We want to live this special date as a wish for the future of all citizens, European and non-European, who believe in these values.

Happy birthday Schengen!
