Never before has there been such a need to broaden the dialogue on European values to all citizens and all living forces in the Union. A cross-cutting and potentially interesting topic for all our readers, because every European project, whether realized or “in pectore,” carries a specific sensibility and vision of European values.
Through the efforts of the EuropeanFoundation Centre and the European Economic and Social Committee, new actions are being developed in support of this important issue.
At their urging, an Action Plan for dialogue and mobilization of civil society and citizens was approved in June. Specific interventions will be planned during 2019 to implement its recommendations.
Building on this commitment, on January 16, the European Economic and Social Committee will hold a public meeting in Brussels as part of the preparation, at the request of the Romanian presidency, of an opinion on European philanthropy. Strongly desired by the European Foundation Centre, this opinion will focus on measures to promote the contribution of philanthropy to community values and the economic and social development of the Union.
The topic is of particular interest to Foundations and Philanthropic Organizations in our area, which have always been at the forefront of promoting the participation of citizens and the Third Sector in the social, civil and political life of the European Union.
Also on the topic of European values, we recall the Proposal for a Regulation by the European Commission to establish a specific Program dedicated to European Rights and Values for the 2021-2027 programming period, with a large financial allocation (as anticipated in our previous post on future EU programs).
This proposal will be voted on by the European Parliament next January 17.
