This first chapter presents the importance of European projects for our local organisations and introduces the Guide’s objective: to understand the scope, operation and general structure of European funding, providing the tools and information useful for further study.

It then illustrates the “raison d’être” of European projects from the point of view of the funding bodies (the European institutions), the major types of funding that exist, and the basic considerations useful in sifting through the potential and limitations of the opportunity they represent.
